Dede suffers from the human papilloma virus (HPV) and an under-performing immune system which has resulted in warts and root-like growths sprouting from his body since the age of 15. Divorced by his wife, he has begged and performed in sideshows to support his two teenage children. In late November 2007 the Indonesian government granted Dede free treatment after his condition was highlighted by these pictures and a Discovery Channel documentary film.
